Our baby has a gender!

Might as well start off with the big news this week...

it's a BOY!

After a long awaited 20 weeks, we have reached the halfway point of my pregnancy and Adam and I got to finally see which gender our little one was. We were thrilled to find out that the baby we have so lovingly been calling Taquito is in fact a baby boy. This means that at the end of November we will be welcoming...

Desmond Michael Drake!

I cannot tell you how hopelessly in love with him we both already are and I am looking forward to learning tips and tricks on how to raise a baby boy. Luckily, my mother in law raised three of them so I am sure there will be lots of wisdom coming from that direction. :)

To make the announcement to friends and family (those that could make it) we hosted a big gender reveal party. In the yard we hung up a pinata (a bull that Adam named Hernando) that was filled with blue candy. We then told the future grandparents to take turns hitting it until the candy popped out and revealed the gender. And boy, did they swing hard! The pinata came tumbling open in no time and everyone cheered out the results. Here are some pictures (and a video!) from the event:

Blue candy had to go in piece by piece.

Everyone picked their side, "Beau or Bow!"

Great Grandma Helen took the first shot at the piñata

Grandma Becky took the next one
And Grandma Kimberly

Grandpa Mike

And finally Grandpa Peter brought it home!

It's a boy!

And there is more happy news this week! After the hour-long Ultrasound, we sat down with the doctor to discuss the images and get an up-close and personal look at how things are progressing. I am happy to report that the doctor said everything is looking absolutely, perfectly normal. Head to toe, Desmond seems to be a beautifully healthy baby. His heartbeat is still in the 150-160 range, no cleft pallet, no down syndrome, no spina bifida, etc. There was nothing to keep on the radar and absolutely nothing to worry about. *insert sigh of relief here* I also got confirmation that all of the little pokes I have been feeling lately are in fact the baby and not my imagination. It was weird to feel the poke and see him kicking me or punching me on the monitor as well. He is still quite the mover and fidgeter so I am sure it is going to hurt when he gets stronger. In fact, Desmond kicked me so hard during the Ultrasound that the tech actually felt it, which is rare at only 20 weeks. Adam looked so sad/jealous when she said that she had actually felt the kick because he has been trying to but thought it was impossible right now. Alas, the baby is avoiding his dad for now but if he continues to move as much as he does I am sure the problem will be taken care of in no time.

Here are a few of our favorite pictures from the Ultrasound:

Yup...It's a boy!

He was waving to us and showing off all of his fingers :)

The nurses and doctors like this one because they thought it looked like he was laughing! Adam is not sure he likes the black that shows where the eyes are...

A profile shot where you can see the heart :)

A profile shot that shows how translucent the skin still is.

In other news, during our week off to celebrate our 3-year wedding anniversary, Adam built a beautiful pergola in the backyard. It was our anniversary present to each other and I must say he did a fabulous job. It was a wonderful place to just enjoy the hammock and a fire in our fire pit. All that is left to do is to plant some mint groundcover between the stone and some grass in the area we had to tear up right in front of it. Here is a picture of Adam enjoying his progress...

Still a little bit of work to do but some relaxation time was well earned!

Whew! Sorry about the long post but a lot happened this week that I wanted to share with everyone. Things are moving along quickly and I can't believe we are already halfway through!
